This will cause the starter to spin in the wrong direction. I've accidently hooked my battery up backwards and this happened. The spinning of the starter causes the gear to go up. Side note: The old starter lived through the engine exchange, never hinted or displayed wear. After seven years fired up first time and every time. Engine has about 4 hours on it and maybe 10 miles. Pressure/temp all well. Then a few days ago, the starter acted as if it could SPIN but not engage. The frequency of this sympton was erractic. Engine was previously rebuilt and only has a couple hundred miles on it.... but the 12V coil could still be in there & may even be wired backwards. I push the start switch and the starter turns and it turns the gear that connects to it but the crank doesnt turn, it sounds like it's freewheeling. I don't know if maybe the starter is. No battery or solenoid involved - just power straight to the starter using a battery charger. Positive to the starter makes the pinion spin in the wrong direction. The only thing I can think of is the shop put the starter frame on backwards reversing the polarity of the permanent magnets attached to the starter frame. The old direct drive starters the 6.2 had from 82 to late 87-88 are very easy to rebuild, and all the parts usually cost ~$25. A new DD starter is $300 or more depending on where you buy it from. Now onto your question about the gear reduction versus the direct drive. The direct drive starter is much more durable than the Gear reduction starter.
